Ashwagandha
vata and kapha pacifying, supports the nervous system, balances hormones Back To BotanicalsBitter and astringent, sweet and heating, Ashwagandha reduces excess vata and kapha, and can stimulate pitta. Ashwagandha is a strong, rejuvenating tonic, a life-extender, and an aphrodisiac.
Known commonly as Winter Cherry Root, this shrubby member of the nightshade family comes from India and Africa. While the Latin name, Withania somnifera, suggests sleep-inducing qualities, the Sanskrit “ashwaganda” reflects how the root smells — like the sweat of a stallion. It also suggests, as does the medicine of Ayurveda, that ashwagandha imparts strength and vigor. We use ashwagandha to strengthen the immune system, balance hormones, rejuvenate the nervous system, and, as tradition has it, promote vitality and longevity.
